This book tells the World War II story of the 111th Ordnance Company (MM) from the time it was federalized in Texas in November 1940 until late 1945. From a frigid winter in Canada to a hot summer in eastern Virginia, from pastoral West Wales to German fireworks in Normandy, and from a Paris celebration to war-torn Germany, the nearly 200 young American men of the 111th did not ask for but received an all-expenses-paid tour of Europe that none would ever forget, but that few would ever talk about. In this book, the men at last tell their stories, illustrated by their own photographs. Now their children and grandchildren will finally learn what their fathers and grandfathers did in the war.
Only the Best The WWII Story of the 111th Ordnance Company MM US Army Andrea Sutcliffe 9781497415898 Books
For those who have always wondered what it was like for our dads to experience World War II, "Only The Best" provides a primary source guided tour of what it was like to deploy, train, travel and fight in one of history's greatest conflicts. Sutcliffe pieces together the history and photos that make-up the war stories that none of us ever heard and that read like an action adventure novel. You experience the highs and lows of wartime life, the freezing cold, the blazing heat, the fear of facing an enemy on sea, air and land while knowing that each day could be the last. This book is a "must read" for every surviving family member (especially children and grandchildren) of the 111th Ordnance Company…to know and appreciate the sacrifices made on our behalf by our parents who later came to be known as "The Greatest Generation". Remembering what they did and passing it on to future generations is the best way to honor those who fought for our freedoms. Sutcliffe should get a medal of honor for this project!Product details

Only the Best The WWII Story of the 111th Ordnance Company MM US Army Andrea Sutcliffe 9781497415898 Books Reviews
I started to read the book and it was so interresting i could not put it down
till i finished it. I would recommend it.
Anyone lucky enough to be the offspring of WWII vets will recognize their dad among these men. There was a certain resiliency to them, a sense of humor to get them through tough moments, and resourcefulness to find another way to get what seemed an impossible job done. As I read what they had to do and how they did it, I fell hopelessly in love with the men of the 111th. Like Andrea, everyone should make the effort to learn more about what their fathers really went through during the Big One. But because they are mostly gone, it would require a level of digging and research very few of us are able to undertake the way this author has done. Great job, Andrea!
The 111th was a small group of soldiers out of San Antonio, TX that was largely undocumented. Unfortunately, the National Archives have very little on these guys as well. My grandfather served in the 111th as did Andrea's father. She stumbled into some interesting facts that sent her on a journey to document their time in Europe. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in WWII. It takes you right through the war...
